Disability Africa is Going From Strength to Strength. Now We're Expanding

At Disability Africa, we are delighted to announce the arrival of two new members of staff, Tom Barton and Mike Carr. Their recruitment will ensure that we at Disability Africa achieve our goal of expanding operations from two to five African countries within the next three years - helping to change the lives of many more children across the continent.

Meet Tom and Mike

Mike has recently completed a degree in International Relations and Politics at the University of Portsmouth. During his time at university, he researched many development related areas and juggled university around his role as a freelance writer for a prestigious online ‘newspaper’. An avid football fan, he has a season ticket at Portsmouth FC and even refereed for a number of years (someone has to)!

Tom studied History and Politics at the University of Exeter, followed by a Masters in Conflict, Security and Development. He has also practical experience of NGO work overseas from a work experience placement in Kyrgyzstan and three months working as a volunteer on water projects in rural Nicaragua. Keen on exercise and the outdoors, he spends much of his spare time either playing or coaching cricket. Oh, and he once cycled to Dubrovnik.

New Team, New Office

Tom & Mike will be working with the DA Director, Ric Law, in an office provided by Brewers Decorator Centres. Brewers have very generously provided us with a home in spare offices above their branch in Guildford – without their kind help, our expansion would not be possible.

This is a really exciting stage for us. Tom and Mike, as Project Development Officers, will be working to replicate the Gunjur Inclusion Project (our ‘flagship project’ in The Gambia) across the whole of Africa. Disability Africa had been bursting at the seams for a while but were unable to expand without the appropriate resources. Clearly, this is no longer the case.

Tom and Mike’s recent trip to The Gambia provided them with a profound induction to Disability Africa and the challenges that lie ahead. Now that Ric, Tom and Mike are working together in their new office, Disability Africa will go from strength to strength.

Watch this space!
